Walking into a new church can feel overwhelming—especially if you’ve been hurt by religious spaces in the past. This field trip was created so you don’t have to navigate that threshold by yourself.

This experience is built for you if you:

  • Want to find a welcoming home church in Athens before the holiday season.

  • Grew up in an un-affirming church environment and want to experience what true inclusion feels like.

  • Are navigating religious deconstruction and want a safe, grounded way to explore spirituality on your own terms.

  • Are curious to learn about different Christian denominations alongside friendly neighbors.

  • Crave meaningful conversations and community debriefs over lunch.

How It Works: The 6-Week Journey

Over six weeks, our small cohort (capped at 18 participants) will visit a curated selection of affirming local churches, gather for reflection, and unpack our experiences together.

Get to know your fellow travelers in a warm, low-pressure environment. We’ll share what we’re looking for in a community, set community agreements, and preview the denominations we’ll be visiting.

Week 1 Nov 8

Each Sunday, we will attend a service together at a different affirming church. Afterward, we’ll head to a local restaurant for food, connection, and a facilitated debrief.

Weeks 2–5 Nov 15 - Dec 6

Integrate your experience through guided reflection, celebrate the relationships built, and close out the cohort with a fun White Elephant gift exchange!

Meet Your Facilitator: Kat

Hi, I’m Kat (they/them)! I started Reclaim Spirituality because I love nothing more than being in the heart of meaning-making with others.

Having grown up Mormon, I experienced firsthand how harmful un-affirming church environments can be for queer people. When I left, I went through religious deconstruction and searched for new spiritual communities entirely alone. Navigating that threshold solo was tough, but finding a spiritual home that truly nourished me made all the difference. I created this offering so you don't have to do that searching alone.

My Approach & Background:

  • Spiritual Director & Educator: I hold an M.Ed. in Adult Education, have professional training in applying chaplaincy to social justice movements, and serve as a practicing Spiritual Director.

  • Trauma-Informed & Neurodivergent-Friendly: Every step of this experience prioritizes your agency. You will always receive clear information upfront, have total choice in how you engage, and have full freedom to step back whenever something doesn't serve you.

  • Personalized Support: Because I want everyone to feel uniquely supported on their journey, every cohort member receives a complimentary 1-on-1 Spiritual Direction session with me during our 6 weeks together.

  • To protect the integrity and curation of this cohort, the specific visit schedule is shared internally with registered members.

    What you can expect:

    • Full Inclusion: Every church on our itinerary performs same-sex marriages and ordains LGBTQ+ clergy.

    • Denominational Breadth: We will explore a rich variety of liturgical and progressive traditions, including Episcopal, Mainline Protestant (Presbyterian/Methodist), and progressive Baptist spaces.

    • Vetted for Comfort: I anonymously visit every church ahead of time to assess accessibility, dress codes, service styles, and sensory/social expectations so you always know what to expect before stepping through the doors.

  • This experience is designed to take the anxiety out of visiting new places. Your fee directly compensates Kat for thoughtful facilitation, advance scouting, and personalized care:

    • 1-on-1 Spiritual Direction: Includes one complimentary 1-on-1 Spiritual Direction session during the 6-week program.

    • Advance Scouting & Vetting: Anonymously visiting each church ahead of time to map out parking, seating, service length, and environment—making this offering accessible for neurodivergent and anxious folks.

    • Clergy & Church Coordination: Communicating directly with church leaders to pick the best, most representative Sundays for our cohort.

    • Space & Snacks: Securing cozy meeting locations and refreshments for our Opening and Closing Circles.

    • Weekly Preparation Guides: Sending you clear, grounded prep emails before each visit so you feel informed and comfortable.

    • Expert Facilitation: Creating a trauma-informed space where all your questions, doubts, and reflections are held with care.

  • Life happens! The Opening Circle (Week 1) is the only mandatory session because it lays the foundation for group safety and trust.

    If you need to miss one of the church visits, simply let Kat know in advance. Please note that registration covers the full 6-week experience as a cohort package; there are no partial refunds or discounts for missed weeks.

  • Not at all. Whether you’re a practicing Christian looking for a home church, a spiritual seeker, agnostic, or currently deconstructing your faith, you are welcome here. This cohort is built around mutual respect, curiosity, and shared exploration—not theological tests.


  • Allies are warmly welcomed! Whether you are a queer individual seeking community, a supportive ally, or someone exploring alongside a partner or friend, this space is built to be affirming and safe for all participants.



  • Never. You are free to engage as much or as little as feels comfortable to you. If a service includes Communion, kneeling, standing, or passing a peace greeting, Kat will inform the group in advance so you can decide how you’d like to participate. Observing quietly is always 100% fine.

  • Dress codes vary by denomination! Before each Sunday visit, Kat will share information and the vibe of the upcoming church—whether it’s casual jeans-and-tee friendly or slightly more traditional—so you never feel out of place.

  • Registration covers the curation, advance scouting, weekly preparation guides, group facilitation, and 1-on-1 session with Kat. Meals and drinks during the Sunday lunch debriefs are purchased individually by each participant.


  • Because Kat anonymously visits each church beforehand, we map out sensory details (loudness of worship music, room lighting, crowd density) as well as physical accessibility (wheelchair access, seating arrangements, quiet spaces).
